The Mixed Pairs Championship attracted a healthy 13 teams this year and play commenced on 25th November. As with all our championship events this year the first round saw some very close contests with Denise Penney and Dave Griffiths getting home over Sylvia McCallum and Dave Hickey after they had established a winning lead of 17-11 on the 19th end with Sylvia and Dave falling short 17-14 at the end. Anna Zhao and Billy O’Neill came from 18-25 down on the 19th end to defeat Kaye Stingel and Glenn Hayes 26-25 managing 8 shots on the final 2 ends. The Quarter Finals also saw close contests with Leonie Laws and Paul Moon establishing an early 7-1 lead over Gerry Lavender and Noel Cobcroft to fall behind by the 9th end and trail the whole game to fall agonisingly short 20-19 after winning the last 2 ends. On another rink Lyn Delmoro and Jim Gaskill were leading Ron and Carol Owen 13-11 on the 18th end only to lose the last 3 ends and concede 8 shots going down 19-13. The semi final between Anna Zhao and Billy O’Neill vs Ron and Carol Owen was fairly one sided with Ron and Carol registering a comfortable 25-8 win, while the other semi was a very close fought affair with Denise Penney and Dave Griffiths finishing over the top of Gerry Lavender and Noel Cobcroft 25-21.
The final was played on Sunday 3rd December in glorious conditions, if not a little warm and saw a great contest between Denise and Dave vs Ron and Carol. The husband and wife combination raced out to a 10-1 lead after 6 ends before Denise and Dave steadied the ship and a game long tussle commenced. They chipped away at the lead to get within 2 shots at the 15th end before Ron and Carol won the 16th and 17th ends to hold a 14-10 lead. Denise and Dave then went on to win the remaining 4 ends to triumph 19-14 in what was an excellent game of bowls played with great spirit. It was a nice finish for Denise and Dave who were runners up in the event in 2016.

The Minor Pairs Championship commenced on the 11th November in windy, sunny conditions and was notable for two excellent games to commence with, firstly Ross Burton and Tony Pignolet vs Terry Morrison and Dave Targett. The game had Dave and Terry pulling away to comfortable leads of 11-3, 16-7 and 17-10 on the 18th end before Tony and Ross gave them an almighty scare coming back to score 7 shots on the last 3 ends to tie and force a 22nd end which they lost by 1 shot going down 17-18. On Rink 16 the situation was a little different with Jim Gaskill and Dave Hickey vs Terry Parker and Warren Brentnall, the match was close all the way tied at 6 all after 8 ends, 15 all after 17 ends with Jim and Dave scoring 3 on the next 2 ends to lead 18-15 and Terry and Warren falling one short winning the 20th and 21st ends to lose 17-18. The semi finals were relatively comfortable wins with Garry Morrison and Barry Roach going down to Terry Morrison and Dave Targett 24-11 after a close contest up till the 10th end, while on the other rink the fancied combination of Mick Taylor and James O’Reilly were overwhelmed with a late charge from Dave Hickey and Jim Gaskill, the match tied at 12 all on the 14th end and Dave and Jim only dropped one end from then on to finish winners 22-14. Quite remarkable that both finalists nearly lost their 1st round match to triumph with the same 18-17 scoreline. The final was to be played on Sunday 19th November, but was unfortunately rained out and was rescheduled to be played on Wednesday 22nd November. It proved 3rd time lucky for Jim Gaskill, who along with Dave Hickey took out the final. The match was close till the 9th end when Terry and Dave had a 9-8 lead, but then Dave and Jim pulled away to lead 12-9 on the 10th end and gradually increased their lead to 24-13 after 19 ends when the match was declared. Congratulations go to Dave and Jim on a first title for both players and especially for Jim who was finally successful after being runner up in both the Minor Singles and Major/Minor Pairs Finals.

Congratulations to the 14 teams who contested this years event, producing some excellent bowls and more than one very close contest. One match was decided by 2 shots with 4 of the matches decided by a single shot. In a curious turn of events, Peter Butler and Paul Budnick contested the final after not playing one match due to receiving 4 forfeits to make the final. Meanwhile on the other side of the draw Jim Gaskill and Brian Burdekin played excellent bowls to make the final after winning 2 of their matches by a single shot, one of those was the semi final in which they defeated Mick Taylor and Mick Brennan 23-22 on the final end after trailing 22-16 with 2 ends to play, picking up 6 on the 20th end to draw and a single shot on the 21st to take the match.
Unfortunately their winning edge deserted them in the final played on Sunday, 29th October, in a match that see sawed throughout. Peter and Paul established a 15-10 lead on the 19th end and even though Jim and Brian finished with a wet sail managing to score 2 shots on both the 20th and 21st end, they fell agonisingly short going down 15-14 in a final played in a great spirit. Jim, although dispirited at the loss was quite happy with the feat of making 2 finals so far this year, (having also lost in the Minor Singles) having never featured in a final previously.
Major Minor Final L-R: Jim Gaskill, Brian Burdekin, Paul Budnick and Peter Butler.
